The 287 Day 2 starters have now been whittled down to a mere 64, and we are well into the money. However there is a big difference between the €3,500 on offer for 63rd place and the eye-watering.

I have just finished my teaching for this semester, and as for everyone else, it was online this time. From the feedback, it seems like my students appreciated the time we had together:

- Andreas Johansson One of the things that motivate me the most in my work is to be able to improve the daily life of users. I have the opportunity to do this in my current work, where I have contributed to the UX Strategy for the last 3+ years.
Hence, I feel obliged to write about how I set it up.
Zoom
Here at the Stockholm School of Economics, we are using Zoom to teach. Even if it is an excellent software for online video meetings, I quickly ran into restrictions that I found very restrictive.
- Why is the control menu hidden? Makes it a hassle every time you want to switch between windows and screens.
- I would like to have my video feed on top of everything I’m showing. However, it only works for the slides and no control of the overlay’s size and position.
- Why doesn’t the main session show up in the breakout rooms? It seems like a strange implementation of breakout rooms, that each of the breakout rooms is their own session. As the teacher, you should be able to send the main session video/audio feed to the breakout rooms.
I found a solution to the first two points. However, I don’t know how to improve the experience of the breakout rooms.
Open Broadcaster Software (OBS)
OBS is a free software to create a video-feed for streaming, similar to a studio. Hence, I can get full control of what my “camera” is showing by using OBS. However, it requires a setup to get it working.
For an introduction to OBS, see this link.
Make the videofeed into a camera feed
Download and install the virtual camera plugin, which allows us to send the video feed as a camera feed. We just need to remember to activate it under ‘Tools’ before any call. After it is activated, anything we show in our stream will also be viewed as a hardware camera in our system, which we now can select in any software we are using to make video calls.
Aligning the audio
When using OBS as a camera feed, my audio became miss-synced. However, I found a workaround to get it aligned by using virtual audio cables.
After installation, the system will now have a new audio input/output device. Go to: Settings > Audio > Advanced, and set monitoring device to the “CABLE Input (VB-Audio Virtual Cable)” device. Now we can select the virtual cable, “CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable),” as input to any other software in our system.
Some troubleshooting
If we have multiple audio devices, OBS might select the wrong device. Go under Settings > Audio and check that the device we want to use is detected. Also, right-click in the “Audio Mixer” window, and select “Advanced Audio Properties.” Here we can turn off/on different audio sources. As an example, OBS recorded my system audio as default, which created audio feedback in my headphones.
Final Note
Now I also have a green screen, which also took some time to set up properly. I can recommend this guide, which solved a lot of my issues. (I just need to add another color correction before the chroma key, to increase the saturation of the green screen)
Even if it took some time to set up, I’m still happy I did it. It seems like this online environment will continue for the foreseeable future, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many things will continue to be online, even after the Corona crisis has ended.
The final 27 are as follows. I'll update eliminations as they happen.
